Industrial companies and consulting organizations are often required to provide research services that are either technically outside the company’s usual business expertise, or place a strain on full-time staff. Contracting this research with a consultant is a cost effective and efficient option.
Dr. Rowlands will work with your technical staff to define the practicality of the research, to clearly define the scope of services, to determine your expectations, and to negotiate a cost for the services.
Dr. Rowlands has undertaken and completed numerous contract research projects on behalf of industrial, commercial, and governmental clients and through consulting contracts and grants from professional societies and state and federal agencies.
Dr. Rowlands research projects have been concentrated in the areas of:
- Structural Geology
- Regional Tectonics
- Tectonic Modeling
- Seismicity and Seismology
- Capable Faulting
- Neotectonics
- Geohazards
- Rock Mechanics
- Regional Gravity Studies
- Geothermics
- Environmental Remediation Effectiveness

Structural Geology
Dr. Rowlands has research experience integrating surface geological data, well log data, and seismic reflection data to determine detailed geologic structure, as exhibited by this study of the Broadtop Synclinorium in the central part of the Appalachian Overthrust. Dr. Rowlands has done similar studies in the Southern Appalachians and the Northern Rockies. (Link to Broadtop 2.pdf)
Regional Tectonics
Dr. Rowlands research experience includes integrating surface geological data, regional geological data, interpretation of satellite imagery, and earthquake data to unravel the regional tectonics of the Sulaiman Range and other areas of Pakistan. (Link to Sulaiman.pdf)
Satellite Image of Mianwali Re-entrant, Pakistan, showing the Salt Range, Potwar Plateau, Kalabagh Fault, Surghar, Khisor, and Marwat ranges
Tectonic Modeling
Dr. Rowlands developed a tectonics model of the Baluchistan Arc in Pakistan and Afghanistan based on field studies, analysis of regional geologic structures, and earthquake data. (Link to Baluchistan.pdf)
Capable Faulting
Dr. Rowlands work with capable faults has been primarily for nuclear power plants and large industrial facilities located throughout the world. These investigations include detailed geologic mapping, radiometric age determinations, and paleomagnetic age determinations.
Environmental Remediation Effectiveness
Dr. Rowlands evaluated the production characteristics of soil vapor extraction systems to establish criteria for determining the effectiveness of contractor performance and for inclusion in future performance based remediation contracts.
